IN a move meant to create dialogue with its members, Highlanders FC chairman Peter Dube has encouraged members to submit notices of matters they wish discussed at their 7 July extra-ordinary general meeting by Monday. All Highlanders members are expected to attend the club’s mid-year meeting to review the club’s first half performance as well as get the chairman and treasurer’s reports.
“There are certain policy issues that members may want discussed and what we are saying is that it is their right to raise those issues so that we come with the answers. They have to notify the executive five days before the meeting so that we can research and come up with answers instead of us going to the meeting and saying we need time to respond.
“We want members to come in their numbers so that we can share ideas and see how best we can make this great institution develop,” said Dube.
Highlanders’ members attending the meeting are expected to, among other things, endorse two board members proposed by the club’s council of elders (board).
Businessman Titus Ncube and Hillside Teachers’ College principal Elkanah Dube are tipped to bounce back to the Highlanders board of directors.
The duo were members but opted to step down as they did not agree with the executive on matters to do with corporate governance.
Their return is expected to strengthen the board as they bring a lot of experience.
According to impeccable sources, the two are expected to be endorsed by members as dictated by the constitution.
When Titus tendered his resignation to the club’s board of directors he was quick to point out that his heart was still with Highlanders and would return if his services were needed at a later stage.
Last year the club unearthed serious financial irregularities after conducting a forensic audit that forced treasurer Odiel Nkomo to step down.
The Highlanders board has 12 seats but only 10 have been taken.
The board has chairman Mgcini Nkolomi who took over from Dumisani Sandi early this year after the latter opted to remain as an ordinary board member, Jonathan Moyo, Msongelwa Mangena, Justice Nicholas Mathonsi, Cosmas Sikhosana, Luke Mnkandla, Jimmy Ncube, retired colonel Thomas Ngwenya and Davis Sibanda.
In an earlier interview, Jimmy Ncube the board’s spokesman could neither deny nor confirm that Titus and Elkanah had been shortlisted for board positions but confirmed that they would recommend two people to join them.
“As a board we have decided to utilise all the board slots meaning that since we have been working as a 10-member board, we will add two people. As it is we are in the process of shortlisting names which we are going to recommend to the owners of the club who are members during the midyear general meeting.
“Unfortunately, I cannot tell you the names of people shortlisted you can only know about them after the Highlanders members have endorsed them,” said Ncube.
For one to be eligible for a Highlanders board seat, he or she should have been a life card- carrying member for at least 10 years and must have helped the club in different ways.
