Date set for Khami Chess Tourney

THE much awaited Khami Chess Tournament which was scheduled to be played at the end of last month is set to be played on 28 September.
Khami Prison will play host to the tournament. The tournament was postponed from 27 July as it clashed with President Robert Mugabe’s star rally on the same day.

The spokesman for Bulawayo Chess Club Moses Mutipforo said they had moved the tournament to September when schools open.
“We are waiting for schools to open that’s why we have moved the tournament to September.

“We want the school pupils to participate as well,” said Mutipforo.
The tournament is being held for the first time and is meant to revive the chess league in the region.

“We want to form an association but first we need to know the teams, hence we organised this tournament” said Mutipforo
Registration fee is $30 per team.

Mutipforo encouraged teams to register early.
Each team will have four players and the tournament will be played over five rounds.

Bulawayo Polytechnic, Hillside Teachers College and School of Mines are among the 10 teams that have so far registered to participate in the tournament.
