FORMER Zimbabwe cricket coach Dave Houghton believes the Chevrons can compete in next week’s historic one-off Test against England if they cash in on the dry, batter-friendly conditions.
Zimbabwe are warming up for the clash with a four-day match against a PCC Select XI at Leicester’s Uptonsteel County Ground.
“Normally the first Test of the summer is dominated by seam bowling,” said Houghton.
“But there’s been very little rain and it’s warmer than usual. Batsmen have been flourishing, it’s hard work for bowlers.”
Houghton, who coached in England for nearly 20 years, expects a flat track and high scores, but warned of England’s dangerous pace attack, especially with the traditional Dukes ball in play.
“England have quick bowlers, so expect good bounce and reverse swing with the older ball,” he said.
“The wickets should be good to bat on, so guys who get in must go big.”
Houghton backed the selectors but felt Vincent Masekesa should have travelled for experience.
“I don’t think he would’ve played, but it would have been good for him to be here.”
He also hailed the addition of ex-England batter Gary Ballance to Zimbabwe’s technical team.
“Gary is a wise addition, with 15 years of county and international experience, he has a lot of wisdom to pass on.”
