DAVIS Granite were crowned champions of the Asphalt Products 30th Anniversary Corporate Soccer Tournament held at Busters Sports Club in Bulawayo on Saturday.

The four-team competition brought together Asphalt Products, Davis Granite, Amacon Civils and Masca in a knockout format as part of Asphalt Products’ celebrations of three decades in business.

Davis Granite emerged the standout side of the day after edging Masca 1-0 in the semi-finals before producing an impressive attacking display to beat Amacon Civils 5-3 in an entertaining final.

Amacon Civils had booked their place in the final after knocking out hosts Asphalt Products with a narrow 1-0 victory in the opening semi-final clash. Despite missing out on the title, Asphalt Products managed to finish the tournament on a positive note by defeating Masca 1-0 in the third-place playoff.

Speaking after the successful tournament, Asphalt Products Acting Sales and Marketing Manager Engineer Cathrine Mkandhla expressed satisfaction with how the event had unfolded, saying it achieved its objective of promoting wellness and strengthening relationships among companies.

“Asphalt Products is a wholly-owned indigenous Zimbabwean company established in 1996 and this year marks our 30th anniversary,” said Mkandhla.

“We are happy with how the tournament went and the response we received from participating companies and employees. The aim was to promote employee health through physical activity while also strengthening relationships among companies with roots in Bulawayo, and we believe we achieved that.”

Mkandhla said the tournament provided workers with an opportunity to interact outside the workplace in a relaxed but competitive environment.

The event attracted workers and supporters from the participating companies, creating a lively atmosphere at Busters throughout the day.

Corporate sporting events have increasingly become important platforms for team building, networking and employee wellness, with many companies embracing sport as a way of improving morale and strengthening workplace cohesion.

For Asphalt Products, the occasion also marked a celebration of growth and resilience after 30 years in operation, with the company having grown into one of the big indigenous firms contributing to infrastructure development in Zimbabwe.
