NIGERIAN Afro-pop star Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’Banj, arrived in the country yesterday ahead of his performance at the Lion Lager Summer Beer Festival in Harare today. The MTV Europe music award winner, who is expected to perform alongside Ugandan reggae artiste, Bebe Cool, arrived at the Harare International Airport aboard a South African Airways flight at 11:00 am.
Kokomaster, as he is affectionately known worldwide, was visibly excited as he was welcomed by scores of fans who also took an opportunity to take pictures with him.
“This is my first time here in Zimbabwe and I am happy to be here.
“Get ready for the highest form of entertainment because I am going to deliver the best of D’Banj,” he said.
Fans got a bit of action from D’Banj as he sung a few lines from his hit song, Oliver Twist, improvising to suit his Zimbabwean audience.
“I have a confession to make, Zimbabwe has got lots of beautiful girls,” he said.
D’Banj promised a lively performance at the Glamis Arena before being whisked away in a minivan for a press conference at Delta Beverages.
Meanwhile, D’Banj’s band members arrived in the capital on Thursday together with Uganda’s Bebe Cool.
The two are expected to light up the city together with local dancehall acts in a show dubbed, “The Battle of Africa”.
D’Banj is from West Africa and brings to the table his vast experience that has seen him rubbing shoulders with international performers.
Bebe Cool is from East Africa where he commands a legion of fans.
Although the duo is confident about their acts, it remains to be seen whether they will surpass the bar set by last year’s Lion Lager Summer Festival performers P Square.
Supporting acts Winky D, King Shaddy and Guspy Warrior will represent Southern Africa at the much anticipated show.
This year will mark the fifth edition of the Beer Festival that has seen performances by Jamaica’s Beenie Man, Cocoa Tea, Fantan Mojah andP Square.
