adminLONDON. – David de Gea has signed a new four-year contract at Manchester United, the club have confirmed. De Gea has signed a new four-year deal at Manchester United after seeing his dream move to Real Madrid fall apart on transfer deadline day last week.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper initiated talks after the collapse of a £29million move to Madrid as he had grown tired of the furore over his future.
Jorge Mendes, De Gea’s agent, was at United’s training ground on Thursday for further talks with manager Louis van Gaal and club officials. They were joined by De Gea and members of his family.
The 24-year-old Spain international almost joined Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, but the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time. De Gea’s previous contract was set to expire next summer, while his new deal includes an option for a further year.
“I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and working hard,” said De Gea.
“I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career.
“Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop.”
De Gea has not played for United in the Premier League this season as manager Louis van Gaal felt he could not focus amid interest from Real.
Had he not signed a new deal, De Gea could have opened talks in January about a free-transfer move to Madrid for next summer.
United manager, van Gaal, said: “I am absolutely delighted David has signed a new contract. He is one of the best goalkeepers in world football. I am very pleased that he will be part of the team for many years to come. David made a very important contribution to our performance last season and he has been the club’s player of the year for the last two seasons.
He is a popular player who is keen to learn and enhance his game. At such a young age for a goalkeeper, he has many years ahead of him.”
De Gea’s transfer to Real fell through on August 31, at the end of Spain’s summer transfer window. The next day United moved to make clear to De Gea and his advisors they had acted impeccably in the affair. This was accepted by the goalkeeper and his camp. – BBC Sport
