LONDON. — David De Gea has revealed he considered quitting Manchester United and returning to Spain after his form dipped. Keeper De Gea proved United’s match-winner in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Everton, making two fine saves in added time to earn the triumph for Louis van Gaal’s side.
The 23-year-old Spaniard was voted man of the match, but De Gea revealed he was tempted to return home when he was at his lowest ebb during his first season with the Old Trafford giants.
Bought from Atletico Madrid for £17,8 million in 2011 as Edwin van der Sar’s replacement, De Gea made a series of high-profile blunders in his debut campaign. Sir Alex Ferguson dropped him midway through that campaign and although De Gea has since established himself as a goalkeeper of stature, he admitted he was plagued by self-doubt during that period.
Asked if he considered going back to Spain when he was going through his tough spell, De Gea said: “Sometimes. I was difficult when you get a lot of criticism like I did. “But I kept strong and I always tried to remain positive. I loved training. It was a great pleasure so I just did my work and worked through it. — The Mirror.
