FOR two days Brendon de Jonge appeared on course for his first win on the US PGA Tour, sharing even the lead with Rory McIIroy, but then it went downhill on day three and he slipped out of contention.
In the end De Jonge finished in 63rd place at the Honda Classic, which was won by Russell Henley after a play-off, but given where he was after two rounds, the Zimbabwean knows that he could have done better.
His compatriot Ryan Cairns finished in 39th place at the Tshwane Open on the Sunshine Tour.
He put together rounds of 70, 69, 74 and 71.
The Zimbabwean golfer pocketed R141 750 for his efforts.
Jean Hugo of South Africa won the Tshwane Open on six-under-par.
In the United States, De Jonge was in an excellent position after two rounds of the US$6 million Honda Open at the Champion Course at the National Resort and Spa Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
De Jonge went home US$12 660 richer.
Playing alongside Rory McIlroy in the final pairing on Saturday, De Jonge birdied two of his first three holes to reach 12-under for the tournament and get within one shot of the Ulsterman.
But, from there on, it was all downhill and he ultimately carded a 76 that sent him plummeting down the standings.
“It was just unfortunately one of those bad days,” said De Jonge.
“It’s going to happen if you play this game for long enough.
“I just hit too many bad shots. I was putting for too many pars on this golf course.”
