TOP Zimbabwean golfer, Brendon de Jonge, recorded his third top 10 finish of the season when he finished tied fifth at the Shell Houston Open in Humble, Texas, United States, on Sunday.
De Jonge, who appeared to have suffered a dip in form after missing the cut last week, had a bad start in round one when he carded a one-over 73 to tie on position 140.
But he fought back gallantly to make the cut and prevail for the weekend’s play.
For his efforts the Zimbabwean golfer pocketed $231,825. The former Wingate professional took his season’s earnings $1,160,584 and sits in 21st place in the FeDex Cup points race.
He fired a 67 in the second round to make the cut.
De Jonge was irresistible during the weekend as he scored 68 and 67, which was enough for fifth place, where he was tied with United States’ Charles Howell III, Cameron Triangle and Keegan Bradley.
Now ranked 91st in the world, the country’s top golfer also sank an impressive 29-foot birdie putt in one of the highlights of the tournament that had a hole-in-one.
JB Homes, who beat Johnson Wagner in a play-off, overhauled overnight leader, Jordan Speith, who fell on the first hole of the play-off.
Meanwhile, in the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open, 15-year-old David Amm continued with his fine form after booking a place for the final field in yesterday’s pre-qualifying round at Royal Harare.
Amm made history by becoming the youngest player to book a ticket for the prestigious event last year, as a 14-year old.
