De Jonge impresses at Crowne Plaza Invitational

the weekend.

Rounds of 66, 70, 68 and 70 saw the player record his eighth top 25 US PGA finish this season to pocket US$64 000.

The tournament was won by American Boo Weekley with an impressive 14-under par after the four rounds.

Weekley hit his birdie putt from about 22 feet, to go 14-under and his first PGA Tour victory in five years was sealed.

“That’s when I realised, ‘Wow, here I go.’ I need to do something, either hold on to it or try to make a couple of more birdies,” Weekley told the PGA wire services.
“I knew I was hitting the ball too well just to hold on.”

Weekley’s third PGA Tour victory came in his 189th Tour start at the age of 39 years, 10 months and three days and came in his 124th start since his last victory in 2008.

He became the first champion at Colonial with four rounds in the 60s since Zach Johnson in 2010.
De Jonge was tied with Americans Brian Stuard, Steve Flesch and Canadian Graham DaLea.

His major highlight came when he made a ten foot eagle on the par-five hole number two in the third round. His continued good form saw him finish 15th at the Players Championships, won by world number one Tiger Woods, which was his last event.

The 32-year-old, who is the reigning Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year, had a flying start at Colonial Country Club over the weekend.

It was de Jonge’s 14th cut in the 17 PGA Tour tournaments he has participated in this year taking his earnings to US$1 041 979.

Meanwhile, Warren Hills Golf Club will host the St Andrews United  Methodist Church Glen Norah Circuit at their Charity Golf Tournament on Friday.

The event coordinator, Evelyn Maisvoreva, said they were inviting golfers to come and support the charity event.

“If you are a winner you are guaranteed good special prizes,” said Maisvoreva.
“Individuals need to pay US$30 only as joining fee and US$120 for a team of four.”
