ZIMBABWEANS Brendon de Jonge and amateur Scott Vincent had a good start in the RBC Heritage Classic after they finished the first round tied on one-under at the Harbour Town, Hilton Head in South Carolina, United States.
The duo was tied on 22 together with Daniel Summerhays, Aaron Baddeley, Stewart Cink, Lucas Glover, Zac Blair, James Hahn, Justin Thomas, Hudson Swafford, Alex Cejka, Branden Grace and Sean O’Hair.
Vincent a senior at Virginia Tech in the United States is making his maiden appearance at the PGA Tour and looks ahead to a positive start.
The former Chapman member and St George’s student remains the country’s hopeful to reach the standards set by his inspiration Nick Price. Vincent earned an exemption into the tournament by winning the 2014 Players Amateur golf championship. He won the event last July by one stroke to secure his spot in the RBC Heritage.
The young golfer becomes the first active Virginia Tech golfer to compete in a PGA Tour-sponsored event since Drew Weaver played in the 2008 Masters. The RBC Heritage Classic, traditionally held the weekend after the Masters, annually draws one of the top fields in professional golf.
Past champions include such notables as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Tom Watson and the late Payne Stewart.
There are a total of 15 golfers in this year’s field who have claimed major championships, including 2015 Masters Champion, Jordan Spieth.
In an interview with newzimbabwe.com Vincent said it was a learning curve for him and is hopeful to be part of the Tour in a few years’ time.
“I’m just here to learn,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll be back in a few years’ time.” he told the website.
