severely assaulted another man in a botched deal involving 68 grammes of fake gold.
Sitemere allegedly teamed up with the 15 unidentified youths and assaulted Nyasha Hapanyengwi of Morningside surbub, accusing him of misleading him into buying 68 grammes of fake gold for US$3 000.
Police officer commanding Masvingo Province Senior Assistant Commissioner Apollonia Munzverengi yesterday said Sitemere was being charged with assault. He will appear in court soon.
“We have arrested Sitemere in connection with a case of assault where he teamed up with 15 unidentified men to beat up another man after a dubious gold deal where Sitemere ended up being supplied with fake gold.
“He will appear in court soon facing assault charges,” said Snr Asst Comm Munzverengi.
According to the police, sometime in August this year, Sitemere and Hapanyengwi entered into a deal where the later decided to sell the former some gold.
Sitemere was allegedly looking for 73 grammes of gold, but Hapanyengwi did not have the gold and promised to source some for him.
The MDC-T provincial chairman then allegedly paid Hapanyengwi US$1 000 before paying him another US$2 000 a few weeks later.
In September this year, Sitemere allegedly phoned Hapanyengwi asking for the gold he had paid for and was referred to another gold dealer who then gave him 68 grammes of fake gold.
On November 4, Sitemere teamed up with 15 unknown men and went to Hapanyengwi’s Morningside house where they confronted him over the fake gold.
A misunderstanding ensued which saw Sitemere and his group beat up Hapanyengwi who sustained a deep cut on the left eye and injuries on his back.
A report was made to police leading to Sitemere’s arrest on Monday afternoon, having been on the run for some days.
