YESTERDAY we reported the story of a street kid, popularly known as ‘Most Wanted’ at the Copacabana bus terminus in Harare, who is facing murder charges after he and his gang attacked and murdered a 57-year-old man in the CBD.
His real name is Takudzwa Mombeshora, 20.
He is a violent young man and turned violent, when he was being arrested, and bit off one of the detective’s fingers.
He appeared in court at the weekend before Harare magistrate Apollonia Marutya and was remanded in custody as he is facing a third schedule offence.
Mombeshora and his gang attacked and killed the late Forbes Jile of Dzivaresekwa in the Harare CBD on January 15.
Jile was on his way home after he had enjoyed his drink at the Big Apple Sports Bar in the capital.
He was heading to the rank where he gets the transport which takes him home.
As he was walking along Nelson Mandela Street in Harare’s CBD, he was confronted by Mombeshora and his gang members, who are still at large.
They grabbed his bag and then pushed him to the ground.
They started hitting his head while the others were searching his pockets.
They took his wallet, which had US$10, an Itel 70 cell phone and ran away.
Jile’s body was discovered by another street kid who filed a police report.
A post mortem examination was carried and the pathologist concluded that the cause of death was head trauma and subdural hematoma.
Detectives from CID Homicide took over the investigation and gathered information that Mombeshora had disappeared from Harare CBD soon after committing the offence.
He was arrested at Copacabana rank on his return but not before he had caused a scene, as he resisted arrest, including biting one of the detectives’ fingers.
The good thing is that Mombeshora, who is a dangerous criminal, is now behind bars and the law will take its course.
Where he is right now is where he belongs.
He has no place roaming the streets of Harare because his mere presence there is a danger to many residents of the city.
The challenge we have is that Mombeshora is the only violent thug among street kids who roam the streets of Harare.
He is just one of a number of such thugs and they have been terrorising the city’s residents for some time now and many of them have become a law unto themselves.
Many are usually high on drugs and other substances and they harass people, especially women during the day, stealing from them and disappearing.
The Jile family lost a father and a breadwinner to these thugs.
We feel for them and we call upon authorities to flex their muscles and deal with this threat from these street kids.
We also urge authorities to hunt down Mombeshora’s gang members because they should also be brought to book to pay for their sins.
We need a safer Harare where residents don’t have to fear for their lives when they walk along its streets.
