For the Karera family of Nyanga, the month of November brings nothing but pain.
The Kareras have mysteriously lost one child each year for the past four years, with all deaths taking place in November.
In an effort to stop the ‘curse’, The Karera family appeared before Acting Chief Saunyama on Friday.
However, the matter was adjourned to May 12.
In an interview with The Weekender, Loveness Karera said she has been burying her children every November since 2019.
She said all her four children groaned and slithered like snakes before dying.
The woman said she now dreads November as she fears that the angel of death will snatch more of her children.
“The first child who died was only two years old and that was in November, 2019. He had been playing well all day when he immediately started slithering and groaning. He then died before I even had time to take him to the hospital.
“We thought that a medical complication had caused his death but when the other child died the following year, also in November and with the same symptoms, we started suspecting spiritual attacks,” she said.
When the second child died, Karera was sent packing by her husband.
Her brother, Wader Karera, said it is believed that an avenging spirit is claiming the lives of the innocent children.
It is alleged that Karera’s grandmother, Gogo Margaret Nyakapanga and her son, Paul Nyakapanga (who are now both late), killed a Mozambican trader, who was only identified as Samandiringe, after he had come to collect his debt from them.
He had given the mother and son duo a bucket of brown millet on credit and when they failed to pay him, they allegedly ended his life and hid his body.
The body was allegedly never found.
“We approached our grandmother, Gogo Nyakapanga’s family, but they chased us away denying everything,” said Wader.
“In November 2021, Loveness lost another child. When the fourth child died last year, we took the corpse to the Nyakapanga homestead and that is when they eventually agreed to approach Chief Saunyama’s court with us. We are currently seeking help so that the children stop dying,” said Wader.
He said there was commotion when they took the corpse to the Nyakapanga homestead, which is about 100 kilometres away from their home.
A traditional healer, Sekuru Shingirayi Mukotsanjera, had to be called in for spiritual guidance.
“Sekuru Mukotsanjera confirmed that Gogo Nyakapanga and her son murdered the man.
‘‘He asked us to bury the child and advised the Nyakapanga family to partner us and seek deliverance for my sister,” said Wader.
Samandiringe’s spirit is now manifesting on Sharon Nyakapanga and stating that he will continue to kill Loveness’ children if his spirit is not appeased.
The spirit also claims that before she died, Gogo Nyamapanga ordered it to take its vengeance on Loveness and her family.
“Black clothes have become my everyday clothes as I mourn my children. I have five living children and I know that if nothing is done by my grandmother’s family to help us, another child will die this November.
“I am actually dreading the month of November because people keep dragging their feet. It seems like there is no progress as the Nyakapanga family does not want to be associated with the avenging spirit,” said Loveness.
