A NIGHTMARISH crash on the Chinhoyi-Chegutu Highway has left two people dead and two others battling for their lives after a Toyota Wish rammed into the back of a stationary Howo tipper truck on Thursday.
Police confirmed the bloody accident, which occurred at the 71 kilometre peg along the busy road. “The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 02/10/25 at the 71 kilometre peg along Chinhoyi-Chegutu road,” said the police in a statement.
According to the authorities, the Toyota Wish had three passengers on board when disaster struck. The impact was so severe that two people lost their lives instantly, while the survivors were rushed to Chegutu Hospital. “Two people were killed while two others were injured when a Toyota Wish vehicle with three passengers on board rammed onto the back of a stationary Howo tipper truck,” read the statement.
The bodies of the deceased have since been taken to Chegutu Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. The injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital, and their condition was still being monitored at the time of going to print.
The accident has once again raised concerns about the growing number of deadly smashes on the country’s highways, with police repeatedly urging motorists to exercise caution and avoid speeding.
“Drivers are urged to be alert on the road and avoid travelling at unsafe speeds which reduce reaction time in emergencies,” warned the ZRP.
The Chinhoyi-Chegutu road has become a black spot in recent years, with countless accidents reported on the stretch. Police say investigations into the latest crash are ongoing.
