GMB spokesperson Mrs Muriel Zemura yesterday confirmed that the parastatal was having problems paying transporters. “As at April 11 2013 outstanding payments for transporters owed by Government were US$7 million and this has become the major challenge GMB is facing in the transportation of the maize,” she said.
Mrs Zemura said the programme was, however, moving on despite the transport challenge.
“For the period between January 2 and April 10, the GMB had dispatched a cumulative total of 214 894 581 tonnes of grain under the Government’s Grain Loan Scheme,” she said.
The parastatal has almost cleared the money owed to farmers for the grain delivered during the 2012/13 marketing season. Mrs Zemura said 5 065 tonnes of wheat valued at US$2 million was delivered to GMB.
“Wheat payments amounted to US$1, 8 million which is 78 percent of the total amount paid as at April 12 2013. Outstanding payments now stand at US$535 734, 73,” she said. Mrs Zemura said GMB received 81 190 tonnes of grain valued at US$23, 9 million and had since paid 96 percent of the amount.
