PREPARATIONS for the debut Mapressa Glam and Fashion Show in Bulawayo are in full swing, with organisers confirming the summer edition of this glamorous event will take place on October 4 in the city.

A brainchild of Tsholotsho-born and celebrated socialite DJ Mapressa (real name Promise Sibanda), this  fashion extravaganza — launched in 2022 in South Africa — is all about celebrating the beauty and pride of Zimbabwean men and women. Unlike traditional pageants, it breaks barriers by imposing no restrictions on background, ethnicity, body type, height, weight, or age.

Speaking from his base in South Africa, DJ Mapressa said the pageant is designed to accommodate anyone who dreams of modelling, welcoming those with confidence, style, and the passion to conquer the runway.

He said the idea of bringing the show to Bulawayo has always been part of his vision — they were simply waiting for the right time to make it a reality.

“When we started this movement on 3 June 2022, we envisioned creating a cultural brand that celebrates Zimbabwean identity, even though our early events were hosted in South Africa. Initially, our main target was Zimbabweans based here in Mzansi. They embraced the concept wholeheartedly.

“However, due to the overwhelming support we received from our people and the corporate world, we decided to bring the Mapressa Glam and Fashion Show home to Bulawayo for our very first summer edition in October,” said DJ Mapressa.

He revealed that during their last edition, held in Johannesburg earlier this year, 15 models travelled from Zimbabwe just to participate in the event.

“The fact that so many people travelled from home to be part of us was a clear sign that Zimbabweans are eager for this experience. That’s why we decided to bring the event to Bulawayo, ensuring that everyone — especially those who can’t travel — gets the opportunity to participate and be part of this brand,” he said.

So far, 14 models from Tsholotsho have registered for the show, along with others from rural Matabeleland. This inclusive approach, DJ Mapressa said, is aimed at giving marginalised individuals the chance to chase their dreams.

“We want to make sure that no one is left out, especially those who often face barriers in the industry. There’ll be plenty of prizes to be won, with the winners standing a chance to walk away with over R10 000 each,” he revealed.

Apart from the pageant, DJ Mapressa said the event will create a platform for local creatives to showcase their work, eliminating the gatekeeping that often hinders those from rural or under-resourced communities.

“For the entertainment segment, we have already secured top performers, including Gog’ Bekezela, Andrea the Vocalist, Mzoe 7, Mr Ungayithi Vuu, MC Moe Shaba and DT Bio Mudimba — the hit-maker behind Kujata Jata.

“We’ll also give a stage to young creatives, allowing them to show Bulawayo their talents. This event will not only be a fashion showcase but also a major networking opportunity, as we have strong backing from the business community to ensure its success,” said Mapressa.

Since its inception, the Mapressa Glam and Fashion Show has grown into a force to be reckoned with in the showbiz industry, attracting top celebrities and entertainment heavyweights. Among those who have graced previous editions are Mzansi TV actors Cebolenkosi Mthembu (popularly known as Detective Nyawo) and Thandeka Dawn King, Maskandi musician Quality Biyela, and influential business figures such as Brilliant Ncube.

Reigning winners of the pageant are Brian Sibanda and Nobuhle Ndlovu, who were crowned Mr and Miss Mapressa Glam 2025.
