The mother of the baby is unknown and police in Matabeleland South have since launched a manhunt for her. It is suspected that the baby was thrown into the drain soon after birth.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said police found the decomposing body of the infant in a sewer stream near Ultra High suburb on Thursday.
“We received a tip-off from members of the public that there was a body of an infant which had been dumped in a drain. Police attended to the scene and discovered that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. We suspect that this was a case of infanticide,” he said.
The body was taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
Asst Insp Ngwenya appealed to members of the public who might have information about the woman to inform the police.
He said those with information could use suggestion boxes or visit the nearest police station or phone Gwanda Police Station on (0284) 20139.
