COMMANDER Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, has called upon two newly-promoted Brigadier Generals to uphold the Constitution and remain committed to defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Brigadier Generals Chakaipa Mukuna and Gladys Machinga were conferred with their new ranks at an investiture ceremony at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks.

Addressing the ceremony, Lieutenant-General Tapfumaneyi said the promotions recognised the officers’ dedication, hard work, and proven leadership, while placing greater responsibility and accountability on them. He encouraged the officers to discharge their duties professionally, safeguard the country’s independence, and protect the security of its people.

“Your promotions are a testimony to your dedication and hard work. Your recognition among many capable officers is because you performed exceptionally well and earned the trust and confidence of your commanders all the way to the Commander-in-Chief, President Mnangagwa,” he said.

Lieutenant-General Tapfumaneyi described the rank of Brigadier General as a significant career milestone, saying it demanded strategic foresight, sound judgment, and exemplary conduct. He noted that the country’s participation in African Union and United Nations peacekeeping missions, alongside defence cooperation with other Southern African nations, required competent military leaders capable of operating effectively within the global defence environment.

He added that decisions made by senior officers had wider national security implications, expressing confidence that the newly promoted generals would meet the expectations of their new roles.

The newly promoted officers pledged to serve with professionalism, integrity, and dedication.

Brigadier General Machinga said the promotion was both an honour and a call for greater accountability.

“We will serve with humility and caution, as it calls for greater accountability and exemplary leadership. We affirm our commitment to serve with professionalism, integrity and dedication,” she said.

She reaffirmed the officers’ loyalty to Zimbabwe and their commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty while strengthening military professionalism. Brigadier General Machinga also acknowledged the recognition of women in the defence forces, highlighting their contribution to peace and security.

“Women are born with a soft heart, and when it comes to peace and security, women play a part collectively in the maintenance of peace,” she said.

Brig-Gen Mukuna expressed appreciation for the promotion, describing the journey as one that required dedication and responsibility. He said being selected from among many officers was motivating and encouraged him to continue serving diligently.
