Government is considering revisiting the opening dates for schools in areas hit by Cyclone Idai, which had been set for this week to cater for lost learning time.

Indications are that the schools could be opened on May 7, on the same date with all other schools in the country.

Manicaland provincial education director Mr Edward Shumba said a meeting had been set up where the opening dates will be agreed on.

“It had been agreed that the schools would open on 23 April, but considering the extent of destruction by Cyclone Idai which is still to be fixed, it becomes impossible to stand by the two weeks’ agreement,” he said.

“The date is likely to be May 7, but I cannot confirm it. The permanent secretary, who unfortunately is on holiday, would be the one to confirm the dates.”

Government is working on rebuilding and constructing of the schools with a local brick manufacturing firm having been contracted to mould 600 000 bricks for the affected schools.

Winbricks Company’s director Mr Win Mlambo said the Government, through the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, has since penned a deal with his company.

“We have since received a letter from Government which requires us to manufacture about 600 000 bricks which will go towards the construction of schools affected by the cyclone,” he said.

“Our company has since started work and we are positive that we will be equal to the task.”

The Government has since availed about $4 million towards the schools rehabilitation.
