CLIVE Kawinga was the hero that champions Dynamos needed yesterday when he rose from the bench to inspire the Harare giants to the quarter-finals of the Mbada Diamonds Cup at Gibbo yesterdayOn a day when results from the other first round matches seemed to go according to the form book, DeMbare were made to labour hard for their victory against a team they have met twice on neutral soil this season.

With the match seemingly tottering towards a penalty shootout lottery, Kawinga, introduced for winger Russell Madamombe in the 73rd minute, immediately made his presence felt when struck the priceless goal eight minutes later.

But as has been the case with the former Eagles man, he goes “wild’’ whenever he scores for DeMbare and his celebration which earned him a yellow card did not go down well with his coach Callisto Pasuwa, who once again reprimanded him for his actions.

Kawinga was booked by Kwekwe referee Thabani Bamala for removing his shirt while celebrating the goal. This is not the first time that he has been cautioned for the same antic as he was also in the referee’s book for the same offence in a game against Harare City.

Until Pasuwa made a double substitution, bringing on Patrick Khumbula and Kawinga, Trippple B had resisted everything that Dynamos had thrown at them and seemed to be holding out for the end of regulation time.

But Kawinga had other ideas and found his range in the 81st minute, after getting past his markers with some fancy footwork.
Pasuwa later said Kawinga is likely to be disciplined for his actions and also revealed the player was recently fined US$50 for a similar offence.

However, Pasuwa was happy with his striker’s contributions in the last 17 minutes that he was introduced into the match when it appeared Tripple B were holding on for a crucial draw, which could have sent the match straight to a penalty shootout.

“He did his part as a striker by scoring the important goal. (On the booking) That’s the other side of Kawinga. We fined him again last time at training when he removed his shirt while we were practicing penalty kicks. We will keep taking money from him until he is a disciplined player,” said Pasuwa.

Kawinga, however, was the game changer when it appeared that the champions had exhausted all the tricks in their book and with Tripple B remaining resolute.

The Premiership newboys matched Dynamos blow for blow for the most part of the match, on a difficult pitch which looked heavy following the light showers that lasted throughout the 90 minutes.

DeMbare had to work overtime to get through to the last eight of the tournament although Oscar Machapa, who deservedly walked away with the man of the match award, had a field day, enjoying a free role while most of his teammates struggled to play their normal game in the wet conditions.

Machapa used his dribbling skills and big frame to bulldoze past the Tripple B players and was unlucky to leave the pitch without a goal when he beat two markers but his final delivery was blocked out to safety by the goalkeeper Gilbert Chingwandaza soon after halftime.

The towering former CAPS United player had another chance blocked again by the goalkeeper when he latched on to a poor clearance by the Tripple B defenders inside the penalty box in the 63rd minute.

Tripple B’s Timire Mamvura was not available to face his former team following the death of his mother at the weekend and a minute of silence was observed by both teams.

The Beitbridge-based side fought back in the early exchanges and they won a free kick just outside the box to force Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova to make an excellent save as he tipped the ball over the bar.

But they nearly conceded from a Boban Zirintusa bouncing header after the Ugandan rose above everyone inside the box.
However, Chigwandaza was equal to the task with a finger tip save resulting in a corner.

The Tripple B goalkeeper almost gifted Dynamos with a goal after miscuing a back pass from Givemore Tofireyi in the 48th minute but lady luck was on their side as the ball rolled out for a corner.

Pasuwa’s decision to make a double substitution in the 73rd minute paid off as he brought in Kawinga and Khumbula for Madamombe and Washington Pakamisa.

He also brought on Sydney Linyama for Stephen Alimenda. But it was Kawinga who eventually broke Tripple B’s resistance when he took advantage of a poor clearance inside the box to score an easy goal.

The striker, who last season was at DeMbare’s bitter city rivals CAPS United, continued to impress with fancy footwork and moments after finding the target, he created space for himself inside the box but the goalkeeper did well to come off his line to avert the danger.

Despite his charges having to labour for their win, Pasuwa was a satisfied man.
“In these cup games, what is needed is to progress to the next round no matter how you do it. I am happy we managed to beat them (Tripple B).

“We started off slowly but the good thing is that we managed to defend and then scored,” said Pasuwa,
Tripple B coach Peter Manoti said his team bowed out with honour after stretching Dynamos, who are the defending champions and saluted his players for a gallant fight.

“As we have been saying all along, Dynamos will not have an easy ride over us. The players did well because they fought hard. Actually, I am impressed by our performance,’’ Manoti said.
