LONDON. − Manchester United’s flops returned to training looking glum after the most embarrassing defeat of their careers.
The Red Devils crashed out on penalties to League Two side Grimsby − the first time they have ever been eliminated by a fourth-tier side − in a huge giant-killing on Wednesday.
United had gone 2-0 down inside 30 minutes, with Andre Onana putting in possibly his worst ever showing in goal, before a second-half fightback through Brayn Mbeumo and Harry Maguire’s goals.
But it was ultimately all for nought as they lost on penalties 12-11, with new signings Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo missing from 12 yards.
And the weight of their defeat to a club 58 places lower than them in the English football pyramid appeared to be weighing heavily on them as they arrived at Carrington the following morning.
Boss Ruben Amorim − whose survival odds have been slashed by the bookies as his horror tenure continues − was seen back at base at 7AM.
The rest of United’s multi-million pound disappointments followed suit and had all checked in at the new-look facility − after a £50million facelift was completed this summer − by 11am.
Many of them turned up in luxury branded cars, including Ranger Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, Aston Martin and Cadillac. − The Sun
