DEPUTY Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Omphile Marupi has launched an initiative to assist constituents in his area to obtain National Identity Cards and birth certificates, with about 30 people having successfully acquired the documents in December and January.
Dr Marupi, who is also the Gwanda South legislator, said having these documents is the right of every citizen. He said upholding and preserving the rights of every citizen is key to the attainment of Vision 2030.
“During the month of December 2025 and January 2026 l managed to assist about 30 people to get National Identity Cards and birth certificates at Manama Registry Office. About 15 people were assisted to do finger prints since most of them are plus or minus 25 yrs and cannot get IDs without doing finger prints.
“We are encouraging people to get birth certificates and IDs so that challenges that families encounter when people die in foreign lands and even locally are reduced. During holidays l will be available to assist people get birth certificates and IDs. Obtaining these documents is the right of every citizen and it remains one of Government’s objectives to uphold the rights of citizens,” he said.
Dr Marupi said he will work tirelessly to ensure that people in remote areas also access documentation.
Mr Sheunopa Nyathi from the Mapate area, who managed to obtain an ID, said he was delighted by the development and now felt like a full citizen of the country. He said he used to miss out on a number of development opportunities as he did not have an ID.
