“I have come here as a parent to get clarification on why my son, Moses Langa, was humiliated in front of other students. And why he was forced to remove a Government T-shirt. I would have understood if the shirt belonged to a political party since education institutions are supposed to be apolitical,” said Minister Langa, when the principal finally visited him at the Zanu-PF offices at Esigodini.
The principal only identified as Mrs Moyo then said:
“I am sorry for the misunderstanding. I was trying to protect him, not victimise him. We had a function yesterday and I called him aside and advised him that it was improper to wear a T-shirt at a formal function.”
She said she had glanced at the T-shirt and thought it was a political party regalia.
At this point several war veterans who were at the office interjected.
“You are an imperialist agent. You decided to shout at the boy in front of his friends. You left others who had T-shirts that had the American flag and pictures of Osama Bin Laden,” said one of them angrily.
Minister Langa tried to calm down the war veterans who had started shouting.
“The boy was simply showing his patriotism. The anti-sanctions campaign cut across political parties and every proud Zimbabwean should be wearing such a T-shirt,” interrupted another war veteran.
Deputy Minister Langa said he did not allow his children to wear party regalia while at school.
“If it had been a Zanu-PF T-shirt, I would have been the first to stop him from wearing it to school because it would be bad to introduce politics at such a place. The anti-sanctions campaign is a different story. As a parent, I am asking you why?” said Deputy Minister Langa.
The war veterans said there was no way Mrs Moyo could mistake the T-shirt for a Zanu-PF T-shirt because the particular T-shirt the Deputy Minister was wearing has a Government logo.
They accused her of deliberately humiliating Moses because he was the son of a Government Minister who belonged to Zanu-PF.
Mrs Moyo who looked frightened continued apologising.
Deputy Minister Langa accepted her apology and called for cordial relations.
“Thank you for coming here so that we could resolve this issue amicably. Mama, please help my son to get over this issue because it may have traumatised him,” he said.
