ONE of Zimbabwe’s finest football players, Derick Phiri has died.
The former Zimbabwe Saints, Railstars footballer passed on in his sleep at his home in Bulawayo’s high density suburb of Mpopoma at the age of 43.
The late Phiri also played for Zimbabwe Under 20 team and his career was reportedly cut short due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
In 2004,he was involved in two accidents and broke one of his legs and could not continue playing. At that time, he had been called up by the now defunct AmaZulu. He left behind his wife Sukoluhle Kangwnde, four children and the last born is six months old. Mourners are gathered at block 11/324 in Mpopoma.
Kangwende said her late husband was a soccer enthusiast and a great family man who was always happy.
“My husband loved soccer even after his injury he did not stop, he was involved with the community soccer. He was managing an academy which he had formed with his brother Thompson Phiri who is based in England, the academy is called Little Champions and caters for young football players from around Matshobana and Mpopoma,” said Kangwende.
Phiri’s mother Helen Phiri said that she was saddened by the passing of her son whom she described as a loving father to his girls and an exemplary football player in the community.
“I’m deeply saddened by the sudden death of my son. Although he no longer actively played football he still supported his community by donating equipment, kits, medals and balls whenever they had a tournament to the local teams that participated. He was well known as he made friends wherever he would go, he left behind four girls the youngest being six months old,” said Helen.
Burial arrangements for the late footie star are yet to be announced.
