A POLICEMAN stationed at CID Headquarters is under investigation after allegedly accepting money from a businessman, claiming it would be used to facilitate the arrest of a suspect in a fraud case.
Donald Mutsau appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Jessie Kufa yesterday, but was not asked to plead.
He was released on US$200 bail.
The complainant, Cephas Gasura, is the director of Nhari Motors, located in Glen Norah B, Harare is involved in the business of buying and selling cars.
According to court documents, on December 23 last year, Mutsau visited Gasura at his workplace.
During their conversation, Gasura informed Mutsau about a fraud case he had reported against a man named Vitalis Munemo, who was reportedly at large and the subject of investigation by the CID Commercial Crimes Division.
Mutsau allegedly expressed a willingness to assist Gasura in apprehending Munemo after receiving his full particulars and contact details.
On Christmas Eve, Mutsau approached Gasura again and claimed he had obtained information indicating that Munemo had fled to Bulawayo, for which he requested funding to travel there for the arrest.
Desperate to see Munemo apprehended, Gasura agreed to finance the trip.
Mutsau received US$280 for his travel expenses to Bulawayo, even though he had not engaged the investigating officer or any officials involved in the case.
He later claimed to have arrested Munemo on December 30 and was escorting him back to Harare with his colleagues.
As events unfolded, Mutsau demanded additional funds, alleging they were needed for accommodation and food.
As Mutsau became increasingly evasive, Gasura decided to file a police report.
