DEVOLUTION funds are significantly improving access to healthcare in Mutoko by facilitating the construction of local clinics, thereby reducing travel distances for villagers.

These initiatives include maternity wards and staff housing, aimed at bringing essential services closer to communities in line with national development goals and the aspirations of the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa.

Yesterday, a milestone was achieved in Ward 18 of Mutoko District with the commissioning of the state-of-the-art Chisambiro Clinic.

The clinic was built using devolution funds and Constituency Development Funds.

Community members further contributed by providing labour and bricks, which greatly aided in the establishment of this critical health facility.

Given that Chisambiro is a malaria-prone area, the community is now heaving a sigh of relief, knowing that many lives will be saved from this deadly disease.

Prior to the clinic’s opening, residents had to travel long distances to the next clinic, a scenario that led to a high number of home deliveries and increased health risks.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, officially commissioned the clinic yesterday at an event attended by thousands of locals.

The health facility is expected to serve around 10 000 households, making a significant impact on public health in the region.

In his address, Advocate Ndudzo emphasised the vital role that health facilities play in communities.

“The Chisambiro Clinic stands tall today, poised to provide services to approximately 10 000 households and even extending its reach to neighbouring Mudzi District,” he said.

“This facility is more than just brick and cement; it represents a life-changing opportunity for individuals and families across Mutoko, including children, the elderly, the physically challenged, and women.”

Highlighting the Government’s commitment to healthcare, he said,

“The commitment by President Mnangagwa has always been to ensure that healthcare is accessible, and with this clinic, we take a giant leap toward achieving this vital goal.”

His remarks reflect the Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services, especially in rural areas where access has historically been limited.

Advocate Ndudzo also applauded the Mutoko Rural District Council for its tireless work in improving the livelihoods of local residents.

“Allow me to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Mutoko Rural District Council for their steadfast commitment to our rural communities.

“Your steadfast vision and dedication towards positive healthcare act as a shining example for what can be accomplished when people work together,” he said.

The Chisambiro Clinic is not only a critical addition to the local healthcare infrastructure but also a symbol of community resilience and cooperation.

The participation of community members in the clinic’s construction demonstrates the strength of local engagement in development projects.

Mutoko RDC chairperson Alderman Trust Kachidza thanked the Government for allocating devolution funds that have been instrumental in the district’s development.

“We are grateful for the resources provided, which have enabled us to establish vital infrastructure like the Chisambiro Clinic.

“This clinic will significantly improve healthcare access for residents,” he said.

The commissioning of the clinic brought immense joy to the people of Chisambiro and surrounding areas.

Amai Nyamasoka from Tori Village expressed her gratitude, saying, “Gone are the days of travelling long distances to seek health services. Thank you, Government, for remembering us.

“Yes, the project was kick-started by the community, but it was not easy. Government quickly intervened, and here we are today.

“We are happy that our health has been prioritised.”

Mrs Juliet Nyaumba also shared her experiences prior to the clinic’s opening.

“For a long time, we have been facing challenges of walking for more than 15 km to the next clinic.

“This area is commonly known for being malaria-prone, and people used to die because they would not have received timely help.

“But now, all that is in the past,” she said.

She noted the enthusiasm among residents, reflecting on the large turnout for the official opening. “As you can see, a lot of people have come to witness the official opening.

“People are happy and we thank everyone who made this project a success. We appeal for authorities to establish a mothers’ waiting shelter here so that the pregnant can be housed nearby while waiting to deliver.”

The completion of Chisambiro Clinic is not only a landmark achievement for the community but also demonstrates the Government’s commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in rural areas.

The project commenced in 2009 as a community initiative but faced numerous challenges, including funding shortfalls, which stalled its progress.

However, with the ushering in of the Second Republic, President Mnangagwa’s administration prioritised the completion of stalled projects, leading to the clinic’s eventual establishment.

Chisambiro Clinic is poised to make a significant impact on healthcare delivery in the region. It aims to provide essential services for maternal and child health, along with general medical care that addresses the most pressing health issues faced by local residents.

The Government’s focus on devolution and local development underscores a broader vision for equitable growth and sustainable community development across Zimbabwe.

By enhancing local governance and ensuring that citizens are active participants in their development, the Government aims to uplift the quality of life for all, especially in underserved areas.
