THE national pool table is about to get loud and crowded. The Zimbabwe Pool Association (Zipa) has teamed up with the flashy Nevsun Select Hall to host a high-stakes singles tournament that is expected to draw hundreds of cue masters to Masvingo from 22 to 23 November.
Tournament director Wellington “Dewa” Chikasha said everything is set for what could turn into a battle of nerves, accuracy and pure table swagger.
“Registration is pegged at US$30 in the men’s category. Women are going to pay US$20. The deadline for registration will be on 20 November. There will be no registration on the day of the tournament,” said Chikasha.
The draw will be conducted by Zipa board members or other delegated officials, and players have been warned to be physically present to avoid any drama.
Once the action starts, there will be no mercy.
“Once play has started players shall ensure that they are readily available. A player that is not present shall be given five minutes to avail himself after which the particular frame will be awarded to the player who is present. After 12 minutes the full game is awarded,” he said.
The tournament will be a single elimination affair.
Round of 64 up to the semis: Race to 5.
Semis and the final showdown: Race to 7.
On the prizes:
Men’s champion walks away with US$700 plus a trophy, the runner up pockets US$400 and a trophy, and third place gets US$200 and a medal. Fourth place also gets US$200 and a medal.
For the ladies:
Winner US$400, runner up US$200, second runner up US$100.
Players are also expected to look sharp.
“The tournament will be played according to blackball rules. Players are required to wear black formal trousers, white shirt or Fish Eagles Shirt and black closed shoes. No shorts, gumboots or slippers. Wearing the above will lead to automatic loss of that frame,” warned Chikasha.
Referees will be provided by the hosting province, although adjustments may be made if needed.
Let the tables roll. Let the cues talk. Let Masvingo host the fire.
