DEWERWI Primary School of Makoni District did the province proud when they clinched the inaugural Rural Schools Golf National Tournament held in Harare recently.
Dewerwi shrugged off competition from other rural schools from Mashonaland East, Harare, Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland West provinces to claim the coveted prizes at the tournament played at Falcon Golf Club.
For their efforts, the Makoni North-based school walked away with an assortment of writing and text books, flasks and some plates.
The school was represented by their teacher and coach, Fedils Nyanduwa and players, Romeo Chigodora, Learnmore Karumekai, Prudence Karumekai and Lynette Saudi.
National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH) Makoni District headmaster in charge of golf, Noah Mupamhadzi, said they were excited by the exploits of Dewerwi and would want to ride on its success to further entrench the sport in all the rural schools in the district.
He said rural schools were using make shifts golf courses as there were no such infrastructure.
“We are very much excited by the achievements of Dewerwi Primary School that lifted the province’s profile high. Their victory has shown us that there is abundant talent which we can tap in the rural areas and exhibit it to the world.
What made Dewerwi’s victory sweet is that other participants had access to proper golf courses prior to the tournament, but Dewerwi went on to outclass them.
“The sport is not yet popular in rural areas as it is still wrongly viewed as an elitist game, but we are working hard to spread it.
We are working with some top golf luminaries to raise donations for equipment for schools,” said Mupamhadzi.
