Today marks 13 years since Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo’s death.
The sungura maestro succumbed to cancer at the age of 43 at a private hospital in Harare on October 15, 2011.
Dhewa was buried at his rural home in Sesombe near Kwekwe, Midlands Province.
His two sons – Peter and Obert Tongai Junior – have been trying their best to keep his legacy alive.
Over the years, friends of the late Utakataka Express founder used to host a series of tribute shows to celebrate the departed
singer’s life.
A talented songwriter, choreographer and guitarist, Dhewa’s understanding of music was phenomenal.
The Utakataka Express founder left behind a rich catalogue of songs, which made him a sungura heavyweight back in the day.
His discography boasted nothing short of a rich catalogue of albums.
These include ‘Vise’, ‘Naku’, ‘Mano’, ‘Mudzimu Weshiri’, ‘Chirangano’, ‘Samanyemba’, ‘Chingwa’, ‘Pakanaka Dhewa’, ‘Naye’,
‘Pinda Panyanga’, ‘Muridzi Wenyaya’, ‘Toita Basa’ and his popular duet with Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele, ‘Moyo Wekurera.”
Some of Dhewa’s close friends and music promoters have done their best to unite Peter and his young brother Tongai Jr for the
good of the Utakataka brand.
Peter, who started off as a soccer player, is now doubling as a comedian doing online skits.
Musically, he has tried his best while Tongai Jr needs resources to realise his potential.
His loyal fans still believe Dhewa’s legacy will stay forever.
