While many music lovers may decide to give in to the dictates of the chilly weather and spend the night seated by a heater in their homes, they certainly would need to reconsider their decision and join in the Sunday night party when Dhewa and his buoyant Utakataka Express invade the joint on Sunday.
The dance ensemble Banyana Bafana will further strengthen the act that is expected to illuminate Harare’s entertainment nightlife and bring back the vibrancy that had been taken off by the cold season.
House warming of the Sunday bash actually kicks off tonight when DJs from Radio Zimbabwe and Power FM will battle for honours of the turntable at the joint.
The act will pit Power FM’s Tinashe Chikuse and DJ Squilla against the highly revered duo from Radio Zimbabwe, Lionel Mkhandla and Godfrey Gweje, who also double up as masters of ceremonies on a number of public and private functions.
City Sports Bar proprietor Biggie Chinoperekwei said the Friday slot for DJs came up following requests from patrons who wanted to watch the DJs from different stables spin the turntables. “We have been holding on the requests for a long time and this time we have made it possible for the quartet to blow music fans with their favourite tunes,” he said.
Chinoperekwei added the clash would be a housewarming party for Dhewa, who will perform on Sunday night
Those in the know will attest that the sungura ace is no stranger to gigs of this nature. Take him to Esigodini, put him alongside Motswana dancer Slizer and better still, give him the space to strum the guitar next to his musical rival – Alick Macheso – Dhewa will still manage to give a sterling performance.
It will be a perfect combination of glitz, glamour and a potpourri of music, when Dhewa goes on stage, dressed up and geared up to churn out some of his popular hits that continues to make him a darling of many.
Happily, his health problems have not taken a toll on his act, but it appears it has actually buttressed the live performances that he has been holding since the beginning of the year.
Dhewa boasts a litany of hit albums, among them “Samanyemba”, “Muchina Muhombe” and is currently riding high with his latest offering “Toita Basa”.
He recently revealed that he is working on a new project, and this show will afford revellers an opportunity to sample some of the songs from the yet-to be-released album
In an interview, Dhewa who has been holding shows as far as Matabeleland said his fan base has grown amazingly in the last few months.
“I have been penetrating new markets and there are also plans to carry my project to new areas,” he said.
