Rhumba outfit Diamond Musica has lined up a tribute show to the late Tongai Moyo on Sunday at Megga 1.
The family show will also feature Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo, who is the son of the late Tongai. This will be the first time for Diamond Musica to perform back-to-back with Utakataka Express.
“It is going to be a great show since we will be performing alongside Peter for the first time. As Diamond Musica we cherish the good relations we shared with the late Tongai and the show is our way of honouring Tongai, “Pitschou Lumière, the lead singer of Diamond Musica, said.
Both groups share a lot in common as the Utakataka Express fuse rhumba and sungura while Diamond Musica plays rhumba music.
Diamond Musica recently reunited with their lead guitarist Shaka Zulu. Shaka has been out and about doing music projects in Tanzania and DRC.
“He has been the essential missing piece to make our musical puzzle a complete one and already there are signs that what we have set out to achieve will come to fruition since he has seamlessly fitted into the group.
“The fans have also been impressed and given him a warm reception,” he said.
The fiery lead guitarist, arranger and producer, who was based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, says he was excited about the upcoming show.
“Obviously, it feels great to share the stage with Peter, when we used to perform with his father he was a young boy, but now that he took over the reins of the band we wish him well and we want to cement our relationship,” he said.
Shaka was instrumental in the release of Diamond Musica’s chart-topping album “Amaule” and he worked alongside musicians such as the late Simon Chimbetu, Tanga WekwaSando and Willom Tight, to mention a few.
However, Shaka said he was still willing to work with other musicians besides his long-time ally Pitschou Lumière.
“I know Pitschou and we have come a long way such that he’s like a brother to me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t work with other artistes.
“In fact, I want to record with other musicians for as long I am still here,” he said.
The new album will also feature two songs “Focus” and “Dollar” as well as a remix of “Amaule” as Diamond Musica’s comeback trail gathers momentum.
