Zimbabwean nurses working in the United Kingdom have partnered with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to roll out a critical resuscitation training programme aimed at bridging skills gaps among local healthcare professionals.

The training is being spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Midwives and Nurses Association UK (ZIMNA-UK) in collaboration with the Global Health Partnership, which provided funding for the programme.

A total of 65 trainers of trainers, 133 trainees and three team leaders from Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals took part in the initiative.

Speaking at the close of the two-week training at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital today, UK-based nurse Sister Tinotenda Manyere said the initiative was born out of a desire to give back to the country’s health system.

Sister Manyere, who trained at Sally Mugabe Hospital before moving to Cambridge University Hospital in 2021, said she was inspired to support local colleagues after identifying key differences in clinical practice.

“When I went to the UK, I saw what we were lacking back home, and I thought of my colleagues. We don’t usually get refresher courses on resuscitation here in Zimbabwe,” she said.

“Having worked in a developed health system where management is evidence-based and up to date, I felt it was important to empower my fellow nurses.”

The programme is part of broader efforts by Zimbabweans in the diaspora to support the country’s health sector through knowledge exchange and skills development.
