Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Mbire, Cde David Butau has advocated for the integration of innovative and digital skills as an empowerment tool for the girl child in marginalised rural areas.
His call comes amid continued challenges stalking rural girls including barriers such as limited access to quality education, early marriages, and gender-based violence.
In a comment, following the recent district’s International Day of the Girl Child commemorations at Mahuwe Primary School, the legislator emphasised education, health, and freedom from violence and discrimination as essential rights for girls.
He further advocated for integrating innovation and digital skills into empowerment efforts, providing girls with tools and training for the digital economy adding that empowered girls become vehicles of change and progress in communities.
“Our district is home to the sacred Tsokoto shrine. Tsokoto is home to the resting place of the iconic woman leader, Ambuya Nehanda,” he said.
“We owe it to her spirit to ensure that we make the best efforts to ensure our girl children grow up in safe and secure environments.
“To ensure that the girl child has access to education and health facilities. Our girl children should not aspire to be wives, but business leaders and academic professionals. Hence the impartation of digital skills and tools for our communities is a key empowerment move that we are advocating for.
“There must be collective action to dismantle the obstacles in our ways knowing too full well that investing in girls is investing in the future.”
The legislator added that initiatives must be taken to enhance the quality of education, creation of vocational training centres, and access to health facilities and programs for the girl child in Mbire.
This year’s theme for the International Day of the Girl Child is, “Girls’ vision for the future”.
