Heavy rains destroy infrastructure in Midlands province

HEAVY rains which were accompanied by strong winds left a trail of destruction in Midlands province on Wednesday evening.
Midlands province acting director for Local Government Services Mr Charlton Murove the incidents.
He said there were no injuries recorded.

“Mnene mission hospital in Mberengwa district had several structures including student nurses’ accommodation severely damaged while a teacher’s house at Nkenyane Primary School in Gweru was destroyed and so was a classroom block at Jiri Primary School in Gokwe South,” he said.
For Jiri Primary School, he said, the wind from the western direction of the school blew off 26 zinc sheets from one of the blocks during the evening.
“There were no injuries or casualties. The wind was so wild and came from the direction that has few trees around the schoolyard,” said Mr Murove.
“The roof was so old that it needed rehabilitation because most planks and trusses were not strong. The total cost of the repairs is about US$5 000He said all learners have since been using safer classrooms.
“We moved all learners to other rooms. The learners are also being encouraged to be alert for emergency signals and respond as instructed.”
