GWANDA residents have called on the local authority to urgently renovate Phelandaba Stadium, which they say has deteriorated into an eyesore. Once a historic hub for local football, the stadium is now in a state of disrepair, sparking widespread concern among the community.
The pitch is worn out, the stands are dilapidated, and the facilities have fallen into poor condition, leaving residents frustrated that a place central to Gwanda’s football heritage has been left to decay.
Residents said the Municipality of Gwanda must prioritise refurbishment as the football season is about to begin.
“We need a qualified manager with a passion for sport to take care of the stadium, which should be equipped with adequate resources,” said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“Alternatively, the local authority could consider leasing the stadium out through a public-private partnership (PPP) or built-operate-transfer arrangement,” he said.
With the season set to kick off soon, many residents expressed hope that the stadium could be restored to the standard it once held.
“The people of Gwanda deserve a world-class stadium that reflects the community’s passion for football,” said another resident.
In an interview, Gwanda Mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo said the local authority is seeking donations from well-wishers to renovate the stadium and has appealed to the business community to partner with the council in bringing the facility back to its former glory.
“We call upon philanthropists; the likes of Scott Sakupwanya, Wicknell Chivhayo and other development partners to assist us. We look forward to these partnerships so that we can make the stadium great again. A lot of facilities are needed at the stadium. We are open for business; those who wish to do business with us are welcome to partner and make this dream a reality,” he said.
