Discarded but not forgotten: Chivhinge’s exhibition challenges perceptions at NGZ

Last week, Harare-based found-object sculptor, Tinotenda Chivhinge dressed the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) in Bulawayo with his thought-provoking assemblages. This art exhibition, part of an exchange programme, is titled “Perfection is not always a reality” and challenges perceptions, sparking dialogue and inquiry.

It promotes the creative reuse and up-cycling of waste materials.

Chivhinge’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in exploring Zimbabwean cultural history, re-contextualising it through both personal and collective narratives. Inspired by the biblical story of God creating Adam from the dust of the earth, he seeks to breathe new life into discarded objects—things often considered “trash”—by transforming them into works of art.
“This process allowed me to reclaim what has been overlooked or discarded, mirroring how aspects of Zimbabwean cultural heritage and traditional ways of life have been forgotten or undervalued over time,” Chivhinge explained.

Through these transformations, he aims to provoke reflection and dialogue about Zimbabwean culture, encouraging people to reconsider what has been discarded, both in terms of material objects and in the cultural memory of society.

His thought-provoking assemblages breathe new life into discarded objects, introducing them with deep meaning and commentary on the world around us. Chivhinge’s artistic approach is characterized by an open-ended, inquiry-based style, inviting viewers to delve deeper into the narratives and symbolism embedded within his works. Pieces like “Buried Heroes” and “Network” prompted viewers to question the boundaries between reality and illusion, perfection and imperfection.

By juxtaposing unlike objects, Chivhinge created complex, colourful compositions that defy easy definition. His deliberate choice to forgo welding or glue, instead opting for wire or intuitive connections, underscores his emphasis on relationship-building between unlike pieces.

Through his art, Chivhinge laments the abandonment of both cultural practices and discarded objects, highlighting the parallels between the neglect of our cultural heritage and the disposal of waste. His work encourages us to re-examine our values and challenge the notion of perfection, embracing instead the beauty of imperfection and the stories that lie within.

In his speech, guest of honour and fellow artist, Fisani Nkomo, known for the “Art and Climate Change Exhibition,” commended Chivhinge’s work.

“Through his masterful use of mixed media assemblage with found objects, Chivhinge invites us on a journey that is as much about the physical transformation of discarded materials into works of art as it is about the reclamation of forgotten narratives and cultural heritage. The intricate arrangement and composition of these pieces are truly captivating, showcasing Chivhinge’s skillful hand.”

Nkomo further articulated the power of art, quoting Nina Simone: “As far as I’m concerned, it’s their choice, but I choose to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself. That, to me, is my duty.”

He concluded by stating that Chivhinge’s work embodies this spirit, challenging us to consider the impact of modernity and globalization on our cultural identities.

Among the esteemed attendees at the exhibition was Rebecca Archer-Knepper, the U.S. Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Officer. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
