Work has started on the diversion roads for the Msasa Interchange in Harare replacing the roundabout at the intersection of Mutare Road and Harare Drive, the second of the four modern interchanges across the eastern highways of Harare.
The move signals active progress on a plan designed to unravel chronic congestion and enhance safety on Harare’s busiest corridors.
Managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, the ambitious programme targets intersections at Mabvuku Junction, Harare Drive/Mutare Road (the Msasa site), Liberation Legacy Way/Harare Drive and Liberation Legacy Way/Churchill Drive.
In a statement this week, the Ministry confirmed the start of preliminary work at Msasa.
“Detour construction is now underway at the Msasa Interchange. This is a key step to keep traffic moving while we build the new interchange. We appreciate the public’s patience during this phase, as these short-term adjustments pave the way for long-term improvements in connectivity and safety,” the Ministry said.
The initiative is in tandem with a recently gazetted Government plan to engage consultants for supervising the upgrade of Liberation Legacy Way (formerly Borrowdale Road).
The overarching policy objective, as stated by Government, is “to build, maintain, and ensure the efficient utilisation of road infrastructure to meet the current and future developmental needs of the economy.”
