FORMER Hwange FC supporters’ executive committee treasurer Maybin Dizomba bounced back as chairman after beating Claudius Ncube, the incumbent going into elections held at the Colliery Stadium last Saturday. The eccentric Dizomba polled 116 votes, beating nearest challenger Ferdinard Ncube who had 81 votes. Outgoing chairman Ncube was a distant fourth with just 18 votes, a clear sign that the he had fallen out of favour with the rank and file of the coalminers’ supporters.
“I’m very happy to win the chairman’s post of the Chipangano supporters group. Our membership stands at 659 but as far as I am concerned the number needs to increase threefold as we will embark on a countrywide membership drive. More fundraising activities will be lined up this season and my aim is to make more replica jerseys for the team so that the Hwange supporters, whom I rate as the best sporting tourists in the country, are always dressed up in team regalia,” said Dizomba who was treasurer from 2004 to 2007.
He was the club’s ball boy from 1981 to 1982 when the club had such players as David Khumalo, Skeva Phiri, Jimmy Sibanda, Nyaro Mumba, Johannes Kazambia, Amos Rendo, the late Posani Sibanda, Rodrick Simwanza, Benson Soko, Barton Mwalukuka and Austin Ncube.
The outgoing chairman welcomed the outcome of the elections and pledged to continue working for the good of the club with the committee.
“I accept the result of the elections. The supporters from other villages came with a united front while here in Number One we were divided and in the process split the votes but I will continue to work for the betterment of the team,” said Ncube after the elections.
Mary Banda retained the vice-chairperson’s post with 71 votes, beating Jeffrey Ncube who garnered 48 votes.
Lisutu Ndlovu will continue to serve as secretary after getting 127 votes in a contest where Jeffrey was second with 71 votes.
Reason Ncube is the new vice-secretary having polled 80 votes.
Lot Zulu was also given a fresh mandate to continue as treasurer while Stali Njamba will continue as organising secretary.
