WITH over two decades of experience, Nhlanhla Mpofu, widely known as DJ Dynamite, has cemented his place as a dynamic force in the entertainment industry.
From humble beginnings of playing in local nightclubs like Club Paparazzi, Visions, Hustlers, Snappies, and O2 in Bulawayo, to becoming a respected entrepreneur in South Africa, DJ Dynamite’s journey is one of grit, passion, and rhythm.
In 2005, he relocated to South Africa, where he founded the League of Extraordinary (LXD) Events, a company that provides sound equipment hire, DJ services, and audio gear sales. The business has grown into a reputable brand, working with celebrities and global names.
His love affair with music began at his grandmother’s tavern in Bulawayo, where genres like Kwaito, Splash, and Dgong ruled the airwaves.
“My journey as a DJ began in the early 2000s, inspired by the vibrant music scene at my grandmother’s tavern, which had the lively spirit of a shebeen. The space pulsed with the sounds of Kwaito, Splash, and Dgong, genres that defined the era.
“Drawn in by the energy of the patrons and the infectious rhythms, I developed a deep love for music. It wasn’t long before I started building a reputation as a skilled DJ, setting the stage for a career that would grow beyond my wildest dreams,” DJ Dynamite recalled.
Growing up in a family of technicians, with uncles who repaired radios and TVs, sparked an early interest in sound.
“I became fascinated with equipment. That technical knowledge still helps me today, especially with our repair division under LX Repair Company, where we focus on Pioneer products — CDJs, mixers, and controllers.”
Influenced by legends like Joe the OG, the late DJ Charlie Fresh, DJ Skillz, DJ Que, and DJ Mataka, his journey kicked off in high school, eventually earning him the moniker that stuck, DJ Dynamite.
His edge in the industry? Versatility.
“I’m a chameleon of sound,” he said.
From Deep House to Old School Kwaito, Amapiano, Gqom, and AfroTech, his sets cut across genres and borders. His ability to read crowds and seamlessly switch styles has made him a favourite in clubs and festivals across Southern Africa.
His most memorable milestone was coming as second runner-up at the Sprite DJ Competition in the early 2000s, an achievement that catapulted him into bigger gigs across the region.
“One of the defining moments of my DJ career came in the early 2000s when I took part in the Sprite DJ competition. With just two to three years of experience under my belt, I pushed myself beyond my limits and proudly secured the position of second runner-up in the regional finals.
“This milestone not only validated my passion and hard work but also served as a turning point, opening doors to new opportunities and propelling my journey forward,” he said.
Since then, he has shared stages with the likes of DJ Fresh, Mafikizolo, Oskido, Tira, Malaika, Mzekezeke, and Pitch Black Afro.
LXD Events, he said, was inspired by his mentors, particularly Joe the OG and the late DJ Charlie Fresh.
“The inspiration behind LXD Events was deeply rooted in the influence of my mentors and friends, the late DJ Charlie Fresh and Joe the OG. Their movement, Oxygen O2, was known for hosting electrifying events, parties, and sessions in nightclubs and private venues. Their passion, innovation, and commitment to the craft inspired me to carve out my own legacy in the entertainment industry.
“When LXD Events was launched, it was a collaborative project with DJ Blaze and DJ Mzo. We shared a common vision, to build something extraordinary. As time passed, my partners branched out to pursue their individual ambitions. DJ Mzo launched his own record label, while DJ Blaze embarked on independent ventures. I chose to carry on with the LXD Events name,” he said.
LXD has expanded services to include equipment repair, hire, and sound solutions, offering quality services to a wide market.
As the music industry evolved, so did DJ Dynamite’s marketing.
“Back then, it was all about pamphlets and posters. Now, I use TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram to stay connected with fans.”
However, he insists nothing beats good old-fashioned word-of-mouth referrals, which continue to drive his business forward.
DJ Dynamite currently oversees Club Moyo, Mzanzi Lounge, and KwaGumede in Johannesburg, balancing management duties during the day with his DJ sets at night.
“The club scene and music have always gone hand-in-hand for me. This balance allows me to focus on both passions.”
Looking ahead, the DJ is gearing up for a regional tour this May, with shows lined up in Bulawayo, Botswana, and South Africa.
This new chapter is in collaboration with Mduduzi Mdlongwa from 3D Events and Prince Eskhosini, who are helping secure bookings.
