ONE half of the Amapiano duo, Scorpion Kings, DJ Maphorisa, has urged other musicians to restructure their careers such that they prioritise releasing singles rather than group projects.
He expressed these ideas on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“Advice to artistes, we not in Album era anymore. Singles make sense,” posted Phori.
An artiste known as Humphrey said anything goes for him.
“An album isn’t a bunch of singles though, I won’t appreciate a thematic album like Mr Morale to be dropped chunk by chunk. But hey, people see things different and the market has its own needs.
“Joyner Lucas is so far the only rapper I know who took this route with his last album and about to do the same with his upcoming one. I personally don’t have the empirical data for me to decide whether he (DJ Maphorisa) has a point or not,” shared Humphrey.
Popular club DJ and artiste DJ Prince Eskhosini said singles work best for those who are trying to carve a niche and a fan base for themselves.
“I think especially for those artists that are still working on building a fan base, singles are the best to build momentum. It takes a lot of time to work on an album and singles are easy to push and take less time.
“That’s the reason why I said for those that want to build momentum and a fan base, dropping singles might work as a charm for them,” he said.-@MbuleloMpofu
