DJ Sbu faces lawsuit for recording, sharing phone call without consent

Media personality and podcast host DJ Sbu is in hot water after being accused of recording and sharing a private phone conversation on his podcast, The Hustlers Corner SA, without getting permission from the woman on the call.

The woman, who has also made allegations of assault against well-known traditional healer Dr Khehlelezi, said she had no idea the call was being recorded. She explained that she only found out when the recording was uploaded and shared publicly on DJ Sbu’s podcast.

In a video posted by social media user @ThisIsColbert on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, 16 April, the woman expressed her anger over the incident. She claimed she had to spend R5,000 in legal fees just to get the episode removed from the internet. “uDJ Sbu did not inform me that he’s recording me, and he put that voice note without my consent. I paid a lawyer five thousand to have that recording removed,” she said.

Now, the woman says she plans to take legal action against DJ Sbu. She accused him of using her voice recording for fame and financial gain. “It’s against the law, and I’m still going to file a lawsuit for that. I got a lawyer who’s gonna do it pro bono for me. I’m gonna file a lawsuit. How does he record a call and doesn’t tell me that this call is being recorded, and he shares it on his network because he wants likes and monies and what.”

She also made it clear that she has no interest in ever being interviewed by DJ Sbu again and went as far as to say she now hates him.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. While some support her right to privacy, others believe she may not have a strong legal case. Social media users pointed out that under current laws, it might not be illegal for someone to record a conversation they are part of.

One user, @Deep92Havoc, commented, “She won’t win the case. The recorded call was not DJ Sbu recording two individuals talking in private, but he too was part of the conversation.”

Another user, @Lomjitha_wePOLO, added, “It’s not illegal for a person to record a conversation they are part of between 2 parties.”

As of now, DJ Sbu has not made any public statement regarding the allegations or the possible lawsuit. − OK.
