Durban’s finest, DJ Tira, affectionately known as “Mr Marufu” by his Zimbabwean fans, is set to return to what many now call his “second home” this festive season.

The multi-award-winning South African star is billed to headline the inaugural Chivas Festival on December 19 at Filabusi Centre, marking yet another chapter in his long-standing love affair with Zimbabwe’s audiences and warm hospitality.

DJ Tira, who is the boss of entertainment company Afrotainment, will share the stage with local talent, including Mzoe7, Jaycee (Mr Ungayithi Vuu), Zhezhingtons, Baby Girl, Tropical Quins dance group, Bulawayo Queens, and a rotation of DJs led by DJ Sweeto.

Speaking to Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub ahead of his performance, the celebrated hit-maker, riding high with his 2025 hit Awungazi, reflected on his longevity, teased upcoming music, and expressed excitement about reconnecting with Zimbabwean fans and discovering new talent from Matabeleland.

Below is the full interview.
Q: Filabusi is a small but vibrant town. What drew you to accept this particular booking?
A: I love Zimbabwe, every corner of it. I don’t mind going anywhere in the country as long as they take care of me, show good hospitality, and allow me to perform for the people.
Q: Are you planning anything different for this show compared to your usual gigs?
A: I’m promising a supercharged performance as always. We’re going to take lots of pictures and party hard. I’m looking forward to many people pulling up so we can enjoy this December and have a great time.
Q: Are there any artistes from Matabeleland or Zimbabwe you’re keen to collaborate with?
A: Yes! I’d like to meet a couple when I get there on the 19th. I want to listen to their music and see who I can potentially work with. I’m very open to that.
Q: What qualities do you look for in an artiste before working with them?
A: Talent matters, but how you carry yourself matters even more. Sometimes you can spot a potential superstar the moment you meet them or hear what they can do. You can read people and tell who is focused and who is just playing around. I only work with those who are serious about their craft.
Q: How does the energy from Zimbabwean crowds compare internationally?
A: Zimbabwe gives me super energy. I love the vibes and the way people receive me, that’s why I keep coming back. They even gave me the name Marufu! That’s real love.
Q: You’ve been a dominant force in the music scene for years. What’s the secret to your longevity?
A: Discipline, hard work and humility. At the end of the day, this is business; if you slack, you won’t get paid.
Q: With Amapiano dominating Africa, how do you stay innovative as a Gqom pioneer?
A: I work on my craft all the time. We’ve polished the Gqom sound and it’s making a sweet comeback. It’s about understanding what people want, researching, and giving them something fresh.
Q: Did you expect the track Awungazi to blow up the way it did?
A: Not at all. These days, you never know which song will blow. I just posted a video on Instagram and the response was crazy. That’s when I realised we had something.
Q: What does it mean to still be in such high demand after so many years?
A: It shows that I need to stay focused, disciplined, and keep going. It inspires me to do even better.
Q: Looking ahead to 2026, what can fans expect from you?
A: I’m still rocking. We’ve got a big banger coming, we’re pushing!
Q: What else do you still hope to achieve, musically or personally?
A: I want to spread the vibe and give opportunities to others. I want to build more DJ Tiras and help grow the industry.
