A MPILO Central Hospital doctor has been dragged to the Maintenance Court by his estranged wife over $1,000 arrears in spousal maintenance.
Dr Yahaya Malango was ordered to pay $500 spousal maintenance to Lynette Malango, nee Mazinde, per month by the High Court pending a final order on their divorce.
Mazinde pleaded with Magistrate Adelaide Mbeure to be granted a garnishee order claiming that Malango had defaulted on the maintenance payments in November and December.
“My husband is a man with means. He has his own private practice and gets a monthly salary. He’s in arrears after he was ordered to pay me $500.
In total, he’s supposed to be paying $1,000,” said Mazinde.
Malanga told the court that Mazinde was being unreasonable as she wanted to live a life beyond her means.
“I take care of my children’s needs and have a lot of expenses. I’m struggling to pay rentals and salaries. Clearly, the children’s needs aren’t her priority. She’s aware that I just finished paying school fees. I’m only in arrears for the month of December, and I only got paid in January,” he said.
Malanga produced receipts that showed that he made a payment for the month of November.
Mazinde denied that she received the maintenance payment. She cautioned Malango saying it was an offence to lie in the court.
Magistrate Mbeure ordered Mazinde to bring to court today the letter stating the purpose of the payment Malango made in November.
She also ordered Malanga to bring his December payslip.
