A medical doctor based at Masvingo General Hospital has been fined $300 or six months in prison for culpable homicide following an accident which caused the death of one person. Julius Chiringwa (57) of 10158 Lundi Star in Masvingo  was convicted on his own plea by Gokwe resident magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja.

In addition, Chiringwa was sentenced to four months in prison, which was wholly suspended for three years on condition of good behaviour.

On 16 June, Chiringwa was driving an Isuzu truck along the Gokwe-Kwekwe highway towards Kwekwe with four passengers on board.

When he reached the 90km peg, Chiringwa’s vehicle hit a donkey drawn cart that was going in the same direction and two people who were in the cart were thrown off.

One of the donkeys died on the spot.

The vehicle veered off the road to the left and overturned before landing on its wheels.

One passenger died on the spot while three others were injured and taken to Kwekwe Hospital.

Chiringwa escaped unhurt.

Mr Mandla Ndlovu appeared for the State.
