With over 61,000 active cases of the coronavirus in the country, the South African Medical Doctors Association Chairperson Angelique Coetzee called for tighter restrictions to curb rising infections.
Coetzee said the government should reduce the sizes of gatherings as they were behind increasing new cases.
“We would like to see tougher restrictions tightened on weekends because that’s when most people gather in drinking places and restaurants which is scary,” she told Xinhua on Monday.
She expressed concerns about huge gatherings where people chose not to wear masks and socially distance themselves.
Four provinces, including Gauteng, the Northern Cape, North West and the Free State, have entered the third wave while Kwazulu-Natal was on the verge of the third wave.
Coetzee said doctors in public healthcare were ready for the third wave, however, she was not sure if all the necessary resources were available especially oxygen machines and ICU beds.
On Sunday, South Africa registered 5,074 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative total to 1,696,564. A further 45 COVID-19-related deaths were reported, taking total deaths to 56,974.– XINHUA
