UNFORTUNATELY I have not had the opportunity to study the Draft Constitution compiled by Copac to acquaint myself with how this new document expected to be our supreme law addresses the issue of labour laws in the country.
For a very elongated time civil service trade unions and other interested stakeholders have been calling for harmonised labour laws in the country, the aim being to try and align all labour laws into one body of laws.
The trade unions’ keen interest has been prompted by the desire to secure laws that do not criminalise and discourage the process of fair collective bargaining for better salaries, allowances and working conditions.
Concern is high among workers that any piece of law that does not provide good labour provisions is not for workers.
Anything about workers without it is not for workers. Similarly any labour laws in the new Constitution without the input from workers is not for workers.
