A BULAWAYO woman, who allegedly poisoned six dogs in her abattoir, appeared in court yesterday. Rosemary Ann Collen of Douglasdale suburb appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Marylene Mtshina facing two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal as defined in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Collen, who was not represented, pleaded not guilty to both counts and was remanded to June 24 for trial.

Prosecuting, Kudakwashe Jaravaza told the court that on May 28 this year at around 10AM, Collen administered a poisonous insecticide, Methomyl 90sp in a rubbish pit which was on her Morning Star Abattoir.

“During that period, six dogs, four belonging to Ephriam Mabika of the same suburb and two belonging to Marvis Sitsha of Hope Fountain farm went and fed in the pit, thereby consuming the chemical,” Jaravaza said.

The court heard that as a result, five of the poisoned dogs died and one is still sick due to that poison.
