Education, Sports, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Lazarus Dokora told headmasters at a workshop held at Goromonzi High School recently that headmasters needed to improve management of school funds by recruiting competent teachers.
“You must recruit people with integrity and a high level of professionalism to help the country to maintain its educational status in Africa and globally,” he said.
“Parents end up blaming the education ministry because of mismanagement of funds in school. The money that you collect as an institution belongs to the public, its not for personal use.”
The workshop was aimed at strengthening the skills of school heads in managing school budgets. Cases of theft and abuse of school funds are rising and a number of school officials have been arrested. Last month, a bursar at Churchill High School was arrested for allegedly conniving with the school’s security guards to steal US$41 000 from the school safe.
Deputy Minister Dokora said school funds should be used to promote the general welfare, education and morale of all students and to finance normal and legitimate school activities.
Headmasters, he said, should manage school funds in a transparent way.
“School administrators and financial clerks must carry out the important task of recording and managing school fund transactions in a way that is transparent and adheres to the regulations set by the ministry,” he said.
