A 35-year-old woman has appeared in court on allegations of severely assaulting a one-month-old baby belonging to her husband’s second wife after DNA test results proved that the child belonged to someone else.

Charity Charandura from Chivero Village, under Chief Chinamhora in Domboshava, was facing attempted murder and domestic violence charges when she appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei. She was remanded in custody to August 20.

Investigations established that Charandura and the complainant are in a bigamous marriage. It is the State’s case that on June 25 2025, the complainant was at her homestead when Charandura and her accomplice, who is still at large, approached her and told her about the results of DNA tests that had been underwent by their husband, which proved that the complainant’s child was not his child.

A misunderstanding ensued between the two, prompting Charandura to beat up the complainant.

The court heard that Charandura also severely beat the complainant’s child, who, according to a medical report, sustained brain injuries.
